Graco Receives Quality of Life Award
 04/21/2005 - Since 1991, the Minneapolis Regional Chamber of Commerce has presented its Quality of Life Awards as a public way of congratulating local businesses for providing desirable places to work and creating sound communities in which to live and do business. Up to six awards are given to chamber member businesses each year. Graco was recognized this year for its Workplace Tutoring Program.
Workplace Tutoring is a program that pairs Minneapolis Public Schools with companies to provide reading and math tutoring for eighth grade students who need assistance to pass the test. Each student is paired with a Graco employee who works with the student one hour a week from October to the end of January. Every Wednesday, Graco arranges for a bus to pick up the students at their homes in the morning, bring them to Graco for breakfast and the tutoring session, then take them back to school for their remaining classes. Graco also provides all materials needed for the tutoring session.
Because of the success of the program at Northeast Middle School over the last six years, Graco initiated a similar program last year at the middle school in Rogers, MN. Between the two programs 35 – 40 employees participate as volunteer tutors each year.
“Graco strongly believes that education is the most fundamental cornerstone of a strong community,” says Robert Mattison, Vice President, General Council. “By moving beyond the boundaries of the tutoring program, Graco has attempted to truly adopt the students of Northeast Middle School. During the six years we have participated in the program over 90 percent of the tutored students have passed the test.”
