Hollywood sign receives Makeover
Refurbishing an IconHollywood’s biggest star – The Hollywood Sign – was restored to its full beauty. The Hollywood Sign’s most extensive refurbishment in nearly 35 years was completed just in time for the Sign to celebrate its 90th birthday in 2013.
Refurbishing an Icon
In 2012, major chunks of paints were falling off the letters. With 3 layers of paint, it was the bottom layer that was the culprit. To ensure the makeover endures the test of time, the existing coatings were removed from each of the letters. Scaffolding was set up and the painters slowly worked their way down 15 meters vertical drop of each letter one by one: a time-intensive process completed almost entirely by hand. Next, painters applied 400 litres of primer and 2 coats of paints. In total they used 965 litres of latex paint in satin.
The products used for the Hollywood Sign’s most extensive refurbishment are designed to help the Sign retain its crisp white finish, especially against the elements. The coatings offer extreme resistance to blistering, peeling, chalking, fading, mould, mildew and dirt pickup.
