The gel coating process

Gel coating of open molds is often the first or final part in the production process. The material is a highly pigmented form of unsaturated polyester resin which can be pigmented to the desired product color or the de-molded product can be post-painted.. When it is catalyzed with MEKP (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide) it yields a very durable, aesthetically-pleasing finish.

Spraying gelcoat is done in multiple passes to achieve a thickness of 15 to 25 mm. The gel coat is typically catalyzed at 2% (by volume) and will have a gel time of 30 to 45 minutes. The mold will be ready for the next operation in 2-3 hours. Gel coat is applied onto the mold in multiple passes. Most material suppliers recommend at least 2 or 3 passes to build up desired thickness.

But gel coat alone does not have the structural strength to be removed from the mold or to be used as a final product, so another material must be added for reinforcement. This second step in the process is called lamination
