What is DEF?
Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is a solution, injected into the exhaust stream, consisting of high purity urea (typically crystalline) dissolved and suspended within de-ionised water. DEF is a non-hazardous solution that is clear and colorless. It has a slight smell of ammonia, similar to some home cleaning agents. DEF is used in by Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to remove harmful NOx emissions from diesel engines.
Controlling Diesel Engine Emissions
In an effort to improve air quality, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated strict emission control standards for modern light- and heavy-duty diesel engines. Tier 2 Emission Standards require emissions contain no more than 0.07 grams/mile of nitrogen oxide (NOx). The Tier 3 Standards, set for heavy-duty highway engines and vehicles, requires less than 0.2 grams of NOx per brake horsepower-hour. The final Tier 4 Standards are extending to off-road applications, including Mining, Marine and Power Generation.
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, utilizes Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) to convert NOx gases into harmless nitrogen gas emissions in order to meet EPA standards. DEF is a solution comprised of high-purity urea (typically crystalline) and de-ionized water in a ratio of 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water.
In an SCR system, after post-combustion exhaust gases exit a diesel particulate filter (DPF), the SCR system introduces DEF fluid to the heated gases and converts harmful NOx into mostly nitrogen and water vapor.
DEF is temperature-sensitive and sensitive to chemical impurities from storage and transfer materials. International Standards Organization (ISO) standards for the handling of DEF are strict concerning contamination of the fluid.
Fluid purity is critical and contamination of as little as +/-.08 percent will prevent DEF from meeting mandated specifications. Per ISO standards, acceptable transfer and storage materials include stainless steel, titanium, and several additive-free plastics. Graco’s DEF equipment is designed for fast drum/tote change overs without risk of transferring impurities from tank to tank.
Graco Has Your DEF Handling Needs Covered
Whether a small garage, large dealership, or heavy equipment maintenance facility, Graco has a complete line of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) products for every application. Choose from configured packages or build a custom DEF system specific for your application with individual pumps and components. From the economical hand pumps to the high-performance electric or Air-Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) packages, Graco has you covered. Every solution is designed with the highest quality components for trouble-free operation.
How to Choose Your Graco DEF Solution:
1. Identify your power supply
Choose the pump that’s right for your application. Choose the lightweight and reliable, manual hand pump for small applications. The LD Blue electric pumps are recommended for applications up to 50 ft, or upgrade to the SD Blue AODD pump for longer applications, up to 200 ft.
2. Determine your container size
Whether dispensing from a drum or a tote container, Graco has the package that fits your needs. Fifty-five gallon drums are ideal for one or two truck operations and for larger fleets, choose 275 or 330 gallon IBC totes.
3. Choose your accessories
Graco offers a full-line of high-quality DEF accessories to complement your installation. Select from automatic or manual dispense nozzles, closed-system couplers, in-line meters, hose reels, mounting brackets, fittings, and dispense and suction hoses.
