Air-Operated Double Diaphragm Pumps for the Marine Industry

Graco’s wide range of Husky air-operated double diaphragm pumps are loaded with features to help you get a variety of jobs done quickly and efficiently

Available in aluminium, polypropylene, stainless steel, PVDF, conductive polypropylene and Hastelloy, Graco’s Husky AODD pumps come in a variety of sizes from ½-inch to 3-inch, and provide flow rates up to 1135 liters per minute.

They are designed for a long lifetime of robust performance, thanks to their rugged construction and corrosion resistance. Husky pumps have fewer parts than industry peers; the complete air valve is externally accessible so can be serviced fast and easily without removing the pump. Combine high performance, low maintenance and long lifetime, and you get increased productivity and low total cost of ownership.

Five models from ½-inch to 3-inch

For the marine industry, each Graco pump is suited for specific applications.

The ½-inch Husky 515 is designed to handle almost all chemical fluids and is ideal for the smaller onboard jobs such as dosing chemicals into drums. If you are looking for a pump to transfer lubricants to the motor or other parts which need lubrication, look no further than the Husky 515.

Moving up in size to 1-inch, the Husky 1050 is available in numerous configurations which makes this pump a workhorse for countless applications. When you’re under time pressure this pump is perfect, working a maximum flow of 189 liters a minute, and featuring an externally accessible air valve which can be serviced quickly and easily without removing the pump. The aluminium models are an excellent solution for transferring sediment from the bilges in no time. Not only can they handle erosion and corrosion, they are also light weighted and easy to carry because of their compact design. The stainless steel, aluminium and conductive polypropylene models are ATEX certified and ensure optimal safety when transferring chemical and petroleum liquids in hazardous environments.

The 1½-inch Husky 1590 is mainly used in the marine industry for emptying the bilges, where its greater flow rates prove indispensable. The wide range of material options guarantee that this pump is able to transfer any type of fluid on a ship.

When it comes to transferring large amounts of oil and/or chemical products, the 2-inch Husky 2150 comes into its own. In vessels throughout the world, this highly reliable pump can be found emptying oil or chemical tanks, and can be used to empty a tank when chemical products are spilled. This pump can replace a fixed electric pump in case of failure or when a pump is needed that is better in priming for a longer distance.

The biggest Graco AODD pump is the 3-inch Husky 3300. With a maximum flow rate of up to 1135 liters per minute, it’s ideal for the bigger fluid transfer operations such as filling and emptying tanks. The pump is available in aluminium, polypropylene and stainless steel, so can handle almost any liquid found on a ship. The Husky 3300 can also replace a fixed electric pump if necessary, for example when you need a pump that is better in priming for a longer distance.

Hold and tank cleaning

The Husky range – particularly the 2150 and 3300 models – are also ideal pumps to use for cleaning tanks and holds before other cargo is transferred into the same tank. This is a crucial operation. Ship operators and owners are under ever-increasing pressure to reduce time in port to an absolute minimum. Turnarounds between cargoes have to be fast and efficient, which means that hold cleaning must also occur extremely quickly and efficiently. But there is no room for cutting corners. The hold cleaning process is more closely regulated than ever before, and hold-ups in ports due to non-compliance can be costly.

To wash down holds and hatch covers, seawater needs to be delivered from hoses at the pressure supplied by the deck fire main, or from pumps such as a Husky 1050, 2150 or 3300. When washing down, care should be taken to thoroughly wash down the upper reaches of the holds to dislodge residues that may be trapped behind pipes. In addition, during wash-down, loose paint or rust scale can be dislodged.

With certain cargoes, even a thorough wash-down with seawater may be insufficient to remove all residues or stains. If this is the case, targeted chemicals need to be used, such as heavy-duty alkaline detergents to remove coal or petroleum coke stains. To remove stains after carrying cement and cement clinker, diluted hydrochloric acid is commonly used; applied directly to the stain, given time to take effect and then rinsed away. A pump like the Husky 515 which is available in polypropylene is therefore essential.

Naturally, all holds should be carefully inspected after wash-down and before arrival at the load port, to ensure that no hidden residue has been dislodged by the ship’s movements and vibrations.

How to select the right pump?

Husky AODD pumps come in a wide range of metal and plastic pumps. ATEX models are available, and you can choose from a wide selection of materials to handle numerous applications, including the transfer of corrosive and abrasive fluids. Choosing the correct pump for the application is vital, yet can be a confusing process. Graco’s pump configuration tools help you select the ideal pump for your application:
