What to consider when selecting an AODD pump for hazardous fluids

Pumps play a critical role in the handling and transfer of highly corrosive, toxic or potentially explosive fluids from pipelines, road and rail tankers, storage tanks and process vessels.


With multiple transfer points in the process, it is crucial that the proper pump is selected for the specific application. When it comes to determining which pumping technology is best suited for handling a dangerous chemical, numerous factors must be taken into consideration such as the chemical compatibility for all wetted parts;, guaranteed leak-free operation;, constant flowrates with no slippage; and reliable operation in harsh conditions and hazardous atmospheres.

AODD pumps such as Graco’s Husky pumps meet all these four criteria. These reciprocating, positive-displacement pumps have only a few wetted parts and can be driven by compressed air as well as an electric motor. Husky pumps, electric and pneumatic, can run dry and at shut-off without damage. Moreover, their self-priming capabilities give Husky pumps superior suction lift over competing technologies such as lobe and gear pumps that are less reliable when handling dangerous chemicals. Lobe pumps, for example, are prone to wear and hence product slippage, which adversely affects flowrates and production volumes. With gear pumps, the meshing gears will begin to wear as soon as the pump is turned on. As gears wear, volumetric consistency is compromised leading to reduced or inconsistent flowrates and increased energy consumption.

When compared to centrifugal and gear pumps, whose turbulence can damage the particulates present in certain fluids, AODD pumps provide a gentle pumping action. The absence of friction reduces the shear that can alter the fluid properties. AODD pumps also offer a variety of compatible materials of construction depending on the chemical being used. Moreover, by removing the need for mechanical seals, AODD pumps provide virtually leak-free product containment.

ATEX approved pumps

It is also essential to check the ATEX category of the pump being considered. There are three ATEX categories:

  1. Equipment that is intended for use in areas where an explosive atmosphere is present continuously, for long periods or frequently.

  2. Equipment that is intended for use in areas where an explosive atmosphere is likely to occur during normal operation and must ensure a high level of protection.

  3. Equipment that is intended for use in areas where an explosive atmosphere is unlikely to occur during normal operation and must ensure a normal level of protection.

Most AODD pumps are approved to, or can be configured to, the strictest ATEX category (1) but it is worth checking nevertheless.
