Takkenkamp Groep moves to Graco Reactor H-30 to apply polyurethane foam

Dutch provider of insulation solutions further improves service quality thanks to integrated flow meter of Graco’s Reactor H-30

Headquartered in the Dutch city of Appeldoorn, Takkenkamp Groep provides energy-saving insulation solutions for walls, roofs and floors of private homes and commercial buildings, as well as industrial installations such as tanks, cold stores, ships, pipes, warehouses and agricultural buildings. It operates from six locations throughout the Netherlands and has a workforce of 250 full-time employees and 200 flex-workers.

“The company started with external wall renovations and worked closely with Feenstra Isolatie,” explains Jan Buijs. “When Feenstra came up for sale in 2015, Takkenkamp acquired the business to offer an expanded and fully integrated service.” The company insulates around 4,000 private residences per year, and works on around 1,000 projects each year with construction developers.

A focus on top quality

All surfaces have to be dry and dust-free prior to application of the insulation layer. Strict quality standards are followed. “Along with process certification by SKG-IKOB, the Dutch certification body for the construction and real estate sector, we have our own internal quality control based on random sample checks on the job site,” explains Buijs. “This is in addition to the checks of the layer thickness and foam quality that are carried out during each job by the actual installers.”

Takkenkamp provides each customer with a 10-year warranty on each job. In general, no finishes are applied, although for some projects a topcoat is applied to improve the fire performance or to help the exterior blend into the surroundings.

Using the Graco Reactor H-30

Since the start of 2020, Takkenkamp has been using Graco’s Reactor H-30 to apply polyurethane foam and components for the re-insulation of existing buildings. This could be for the floors, walls, ceilings, and special applications. The H-30 is designed for medium- to high-output foam applications and roofing projects, applying up to 12.3 kg (28 lb) per minute.

Takkenkamp use four Graco Reactors, all type H-30. They were purchased to replace older units from another manufacturer. “We chose to go with the Graco Reactor H-30 for two main reasons,” said Buijs. “The renowned high quality of Graco products was a strong pull of course. But more specifically, the Reactor H-30 has advanced control technology such as an integrated flow meter. This is highly beneficial because it logs data that we can use for quality assurance purposes.” The advanced control technology is built into the unit’s Advanced Display Module (ADM), which is the standard interface for the Reactor H-30. With the ability to track, monitor and save project information, the ADM also has the ability to download data onto a USB drive for further analysis. This data is also automatically sent to a cloud-based server through the Reactor Connect app module. Reports on the spray application data can be generated through the Reactor Connect App platform (mobile and/or desktop). The company chose a hydraulic rather than an electric unit as they believed it would offer a more consistent spray pattern.

Delighted with the high performance

As to a typical project set-up, an installed will arrive on-site with a truck loaded up with a generator, air compressor, 3:1 transfer pumps, the Reactor H-30, a 90-meter hose, and the Graco Fusion PC gun. Spray temperature is around 40°C, and spray pressure 50-70 bar. Usually, an insulation layer of 80-120 mm polyurethane foam is applied.

To date the company is delighted with the performance of the Reactor H-30. One of the most appreciated features is that the ADM stores up to 24 material recipes, so switching material spray parameters is fast, easy and trouble-free. By reducing human error in entering set points, operators are more likely to spray material as the material supplier intended.

Buijs is also delighted with the Graco Fusion PC gun. “It needs minimal maintenance – mainly just replacing the cartridge and filters – and can be cleanly quickly on-site if it gets clogged. Moreover, the operators find it easy to use.”

“Overall we are very pleased with our cooperation with Graco. The Reactor H-30 has enabled us to further improve the levels of quality we offer to our customers.”
