The 4 quality levels
in drywall finishing
When finishing drywall, the degree of smoothness you deliver is defined by the final decoration layer to be applied on top.
The European Q or Quality classification helps you to assess what quality level of finishing is required, and what it involves.
Q1
No decorative
Requirements
Obtain Q1 by applying compound and tape on joints, covering visible fixings, and removing excess compound.
Q1 is meant for surfaces without optical requirements. Possible coverings are tiles, plate, or thick plaster.
Q2
Minimal surface
Smoothness
Obtain Q2 by applying compound on top of Q1. Ensure an invisible seam between joint and board surface. Repeat this for fixings and corners filled with compound. Sand if needed.
Q2 surfaces are decorated with structured wallpaper or paint, coatings applied with lambskin or structured roller, or topcoats with a >1mm particle size.
Q3
High Visual surface
Requirements
Obtain Q3 by applying a wider compound layer on top of Q2 followed by a full plasterboard pore filling. Sand if needed.
Q3 surfaces are ready for decoration with high visual requirements. This could be fine structured wall coverings and paint, or top coatings with a <1mm particle size.
Q4
For the highest
Decorative standards
Obtain Q4 by applying a full plasterboard skim coat of at least 1mm thickness on top of a Q2 finishing.
Q4 surfaces must have a minimum of marks and traces, as they are meant for decoration with glossy wallpapers, paints, or varnishes, as well as stucco marble and similar finishes.
