Air Flow Measurement Tips

How to take correct air flow measurements in the field

  1. Use an air flow meter that measures in SCFM.
    • Suggest using an inline air flow meter (AW-Lake)(0-12 scfm) (Figure 1.1).
    • Make sure the meter is accurate for the air flow measurement range you require.
  2. Install the air flow meter in the air line before the air motor regulator.
    • For the easiest air flow comparisons between motors, the air flow meter needs to have the same air pressure going into it.
  3. Verify air pressure into the meter by installing an air pressure gauge at the inlet of the meter.
    • Air flow meters are typically calibrated on inlet air pressures of 100 psig.
    • Inlet pressures other than 100 psig to the meter are acceptable, but the measured flow rate needs to be multiplied by a factor to correct to SCFM. The correction factor is usually supplied on a sheet that comes with the meter.

To compare two different air motors, the rpms of the agitator must be the same.

  • Any gear reduced agitator will require you to measure the agitator speed, not the air motor speed.
  • A tachometer that measures shaft speed is required. Recommended model is EXTECH Instruments model 461895 combination contact/photo tachometer (Figure 1.2). It measures rpm using an optical sensor with reflective tape.
