Why Strong Bonds Matter in Solar Panel Production
High-quality bonding is essential for durable and reliable solar panels. The frame attachment process in particular requires precise adhesive application to ensure long-lasting performance. Manufacturers who want consistent results turn to Graco for automated dispensing solutions that deliver accuracy, ratio control, and dependable operation.
The Challenge: Consistency and Efficiency Across Multiple Frame Designs
A global solar panel manufacturer faced a key production hurdle. They needed a way to improve bead profile consistency across their assembly lines while also automating silicone dispensing for frames with different channel lengths.
The team was looking for a solution that could:
- Maintain the correct ratio of silicone for maximum performance
- Adapt to multiple frame designs and channel sizes
- Provide consistent, repeatable bead application without material waste
The Solution: Graco HFR Metering System with MD2 Dispense Valve
The manufacturer selected the Graco Hydraulic Fixed Ratio (HFR) Metering System for its ability to deliver continuous, on-ratio material flow. With the HFR, they could apply the right amount of sealant evenly throughout the entire channel length, regardless of frame size.
To address the unique geometry of the frame channels, the system was equipped with:
- MD2 Dispense Valve featuring a static mixer, shroud, and stainless steel needle for precise placement
- Snuff-back capability on the valve to ensure clean starts and stops without excess material
- Dual supply system: a 55-gallon drum setup for the base component (blue side) and a 5-gallon system for the catalyst (red side)
This setup allowed the manufacturer to meet both performance and flexibility requirements for their assembly lines.
The Results: Accurate Bead Application Every Time
With the HFR system in place, the manufacturer achieved consistent bead placement of two-component silicone from end to end of each frame. The continuous flow design handled varying channel lengths without issue, ensuring quality bonds across the board.
The outcome:
- Improved production efficiency
- Reduced material waste
- Reliable, long-lasting panel performance
